Sarah and Coach

Sarah and her two-year old male Golden Retriever, Coach, recently joined the Paws for Patrick Therapy Dog / Handler team and are loving it. Having recently retired after 35 years Sarah was looking for a volunteer opportunity. Coach was just a puppy when she first learned about us – her neighbor is a volunteer with her dog Maggie. “I immediately felt drawn to their mission and felt like it would be the perfect way for Coach and I to do meaningful work together,” shared Sarah.

“I first volunteered with Paws for Patrick as an Ambassador. This allowed me to watch experienced handlers in action on my own and better assess if I thought Coach was up to the task.  I also did research on the Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD) site, and talked to as many handlers as I could before starting the certification process.  Everyone was so helpful and supportive every step of the way.  The side benefit is that working so closely with Coach allowed us to build an even stronger bond.”

“Seeing the kids’ faces light up to see and pet him is so heart-warming! It brings us both such joy.” Sarah continues, “I’m in awe of Patrick’s family . . . the gift they are giving other children and their families is truly selfless and priceless.”
